Most impulse purchases aren’t decisions. They’re reactions — to a sale, a feeling, a two-tap checkout. The 24-hour rule is a way to turn the reaction back into a decision.

The rule

Want something that isn’t a planned purchase? Put it in the cart and wait 24 hours. If you still want it tomorrow, buy it. That’s the whole rule.

Why it works on your brain

Impulse buying rides on present bias — right-now-you always wins against future-you. A single day flips that. The urge fades, the novelty wears off, and the “need” usually turns out to be a mood. You’re not forbidding the purchase; you’re just letting the feeling pass first.
